Connect Activity

 

Terminal Objective:  

Upon completion of orientation, learners will be able to comply with company rules, goals, and research restrictions with minimal noncompliance for the duration of employment at LC. (Know, Decide, Do, Believe, Feel)

Enabling Objective: Express a belief of safety based on the office environment, rules, and policies. (believe and feel)

 

This activity is aimed at giving the chance for the learner to connect her knowledge to her feelings. By rating the extent to which a person feels safe in a workplace, she is expressing a feeling or belief that the workplace is either safe or unsafe.

 

This activity meets the definition of Connect activity because the learner is connecting newly learned information to self and composing a statement to support the rating below; both tasks involve creating something new and anaylizing information to answer the questions.

 

This activity also serves as an assessment because it can serve as a conversation starter and benchmarck check during the follow-up meeting with the supervisor or owner.  For instance, If the learner only rates the statement and writes minimal, it may be an indication to the supervisor or owner in the follow-up meeting that the learner has not completed the orientation with an understanding of the companies policies, procedures, and environment. Lack of understanding would not meet the Terminal Objective and call for repeat of the online orientation portion. 

 

The desired learning outcome for this activity is to help the learner determine if the workplace feels safe for them. Ideally, if the learner understands the harassment policies, workplace standards, and environment, she will believe LC is a safe place to work. 

 

Absorb Activity

 

Terminal Objective:  

Upon completion of orientation, learners will be able to comply with company rules, goals, research restrictions, and IRBs with minimal noncompliance for the duration of employment at LC. (Know, Decide, Do, Believe, Feel)

Enabling Objective: Categorize jobs with their classifications without mistakes. (know)

 

In this activity, there is an interactive powerpoint in which there are informational slides followed by immediate assessment and feedback. The activity is aimed at introducing (absorb type activity portion) each type of job classification and immediately checking for comprehension. The learner can try as many times as they need to get the correct answer to the immediate assessment.

 

This activity meets the definition of Absorb because the learner is  gaining exposure to new information. The objective also meets criteria for a Do activity because the learner is practicing with new knowledge in a quiz setting. There is no time limit on this activity.

 

The also serves as an assessment for the enabling objective's desired learning outcome of being able to correctly categorize jobs with their classifications.
